New Weight Loss Drug

BACK TO MAIN INDEX

We have had lots of enquiries about the new drugs for weight loss following lots of reports about them in the Newspapers and on Television.

Unfortunately, as is often the case, the publicity does not fit with the ability of the NHS to provide these medications.

Injections have now become possible for GP prescribing in a very few patients. These are patients with BMI>40 and with 4 of 5 other illnesses (treated high blood pressure, treated high lipids, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea eligible for CPAP and established cardiovascular disease (MI, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease or stroke). The rules are very strict and not open to negotiation. Unfortunately this will mean many patients who might benefit from Mounjaro will still not be able to have it prescribed on the NHS.

These patients will be searched for by the practice from the medical records and then you will be contacted by the end of August if you may be eligible. If you want to have them prescribed you will also need to take part in the NHS provided lifestyle management program at the same time. The practice has not yet decided if we will be taking part in the prescribing scheme as there is a complex process that has to be followed. If we don't take part then there may be other services that will provide this for our eligible patients.

If you think you might be eligible then please send in an up-to-date height and weight measurement to us as we need this for you to be part of the search.
